1. Lesson Title:

  • “Mmalite Igbo” (Introduction to Igbo) – Basic Greetings and Self-Introduction

2. Lesson Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Understand and correctly pronounce basic Igbo vowel and consonant sounds.
  • Use common Igbo greetings for different times of day.
  • Introduce themselves in simple Igbo (My name is…).
  • Count from 1 to 5 in Igbo.
  • Express basic polite phrases (thank you, please, yes/no).

3. Lesson Outline & Activities:

I. Introduction & Warm-up

  • Welcome: “Nnọọ!” (Welcome!)
  • Why learn Igbo? Discussed student’s motivation.

II. Igbo Alphabet & Basic Pronunciation

  • Introduce the 36 letters of the Igbo alphabet.
  • Focus on the 8 vowel sounds (a, e, i, ị, o, ọ, u, ụ) and their pronunciation.
  • Explain and practice tone marking (high, low, falling – simplified for beginners, emphasize distinguishing meaning).
  • Practice common consonant sounds.
  • Activity: Repeat after me drills for individual letters and simple syllables.

III. Common Greetings (15-20 minutes)

  • General Greetings:
  • Ndewo (Hello/Greetings) – Respond: Ndewo
  • Kedu (How are you?) – Respond: Ọ dị mma (I’m fine)
  • Time-specific Greetings:
  • Ututu ọma (Good morning) – Respond: Ututu ọma
  • Ehihie ọma (Good afternoon) – Respond: Ehihie ọma
  • Mgbede ọma (Good evening) – Respond: Mgbede ọma
  • Ka chi fo (Good night) – Respond: Ka chi fo
  • Activity: Role-play simple greeting exchanges.

IV. Self-Introduction (10-15 minutes)

  • Introduce: Aha m bụ… (My name is…)
  • Introduce: E si m na… (I am from…) – Focus on country/state for simplicity.
  • Activity: Student practices introducing themselves and asking the tutor’s name.


V. Basic Numbers (1-5) (10 minutes)

  • Introduce and practice counting:

  • anọ (four)
  • ise (five)
  • Activity: Count objects, finger counting.

VI. Essential Polite Phrases (5-7 minutes)

VII. Wrap-up & Homework (5 minutes)
